Finding Fun in Fitness

So, last week, I wrote about the importance of consistency in a healthy lifestyle. This week, I want to talk about another key element to keeping fit for me...

FUN!

Ha ha... You thought I was gonna get all serious on you, didn't ya? So, how do you keep it fun? Well, I was just talking to my friend this week about how any journey we undertake in life, be it a brave quest to a new place ;) or forging a path of healthy living, should be fun. There are bumps and issues and hardships along the way, but I firmly believe how you do anything is how you do everything in life. I want to do it right.

Fitness for me can be a challenge at times. I'm tired. I'm comfortable. I'm having a good hair day (and don't want to get sweaty). I have too much work. I want to finish this chapter. There are a million excuses to find if I look for reasons not to workout. But ultimately, they are all just that: excuses. And, its all because I've allowed myself to buy into the idea that fitness is like some sort of chore. It really doesn't have to be. You would think in the past four years, I would have finally come to terms with the fact that I always enjoy my workouts. Day in, day out, I dread doing it and then when I get there, I revel in this fabulous "me time."

One of the things that make fitness fun for me is a really great playlist. This is CRUCIAL to my workout. So much so that if I forget my ipod, I can't workout. I've worked out without socks, without my water bottle, alot of things. But without my tunes, no way!!!

Here's a list of some of my favorite grooves...

Something More, Sugarland

Sweetest Girl, Wyclef Jean

Beautiful Liar, Beyonce and Shakira

Rhiannon, Fleetwood Mac

Lose Control, Missy Elliot

Do It Well, J-Lo

Just Fine, Mary J Blige

Yeah, Usher

Ain't No Other Man, Christina Aguiliera

Badd, Ying Yang Twins

Black Velvet, Bonnie Raitt

Wasted, Carrie Underwood

Womanizer, Britney Spears

Tell Me What We're Gonna Do Now, Joss Stone

Rehab, Rhianna

Quickly, John Legend and Brandy

Dead and Gone, T.I. and Justin Timberlake

Before He Cheats, Carrie Underwood

Love Me Like a Man, Bonnie Raitt

One Night Stand, Jazmine Sullivan

Hate on Me, Jill Scott

This Ain't a Scene, Fall Out Boy

Silver Spring, Fleetwood Mac

Animals, Nickelback

I actually went through my Ipod to list those. I tend to skip alot of songs, but these are songs I always stop at. As you can tell, I'm pretty eclectic. lol.

This morning's Green Monstress... I wish you could see the color better. I love it. I added blackberries into the normal mix: banana, PB, plain Soy and spinach.

  1. Hey! I'm going to check out all the songs you listed. I workout in the living room with the music blast, and the kids start complaining if I don't change up the music enough. So what if it's a little redundant - it's my revenge for them redundantly eating up a box of cereal in 3 days flat! Geesh.

  3. Hey there! Great post! Since starting my current workout program and since I'm working out to DVD's 5 days a week, I am not listening to music on those days. One day a week when I do my own cardio, I do though. And lately, I've been digging the old 80's rock groups like AC/DC....gets me energized :D

  4. Hee hee! YEAH! Work outs should be fun.
I like to listen to Broadway musicals. Am I weird? These days I'm rocking the Abba music!

  5. *love this*
I share a lot of your taste, but i also tend to listen to some really heavy rock stuff like Disturbed, Rage Against the Machine and others to get me through. Since I am still hesitant to divulge the band I'm in to the blog world, I can e-mail you a couple songs of mine that are also good to work-out to!
Oh, and here's my play list from a while ago if you're interested!

  9. Fitness for me is a challenge too. I used to get my hair done twice a month but I noticed when I got my hair done I didn't work out. So my mom was like look...I had to decide whether I want to be fat and cute or healthy and not so cute. She said I needed to make the same decision. I told her I'm going to be healthy but busted up looking...lol.

Anyway, music is an important part of my workout...my faves
