Hidden Sources of MSG

Hey guys... How was your Monday?

Mine was actually pretty good, considering I didn't sleep much last night. My accupuncturist (who I see every Monday morning) adjusted my treatment to address this recurring insomnia, so hopefully it'll be a thing of the past soon enough. Cross your fingers and toes for me!

Last night, Ryan fired up the grill again. He threw down, per usual.

Have I mentioned what an amazing meal Soy Salmon and Grilled Corn on the Cob is? If I haven't, I have now. Oh, and can we get a woop-woop for no pots and pans to wash on a Sunday night? I love life.

Today, after my accupuncture, JGago and I met up at the Living Room Cafe in La Jolla to work. I love having a mobile office, especially when it includes an ocean view and a giant bowl of fruit. Heart.

That's an ocean through that window. Sigh....

If you ever visit San Diego, please go to La Jolla. It's beautiful.

Tonight, though I was exhausted like none other, I really wanted to cook something tasty. It feels like I'm always having to rush through meals. To be truthful, I mostly "fake it" as a cook. You've heard of Semi-Homemade. My show would be called Barely Homemade. I like to think of myself as the ambassador for all those 30-minute meal'ers out there.

This meal used some chicken breasts, EVOO, chopped garlic, fresh mushrooms, chicken stock, and a box of Uncle Ben's long grain and wild rice.

I wanted the chicken to have a nice carmel color and some char, so I used a litle EVOO and some chopped garlic in the pan.

Once the chicken was brown, I added in some chicken stock and mushrooms to the pan. First, of course, I had to clean the mushrooms. This is an example of how you're NOT supposed to clean mushrooms.

Yes pajamas. Don't judge. And no, I wasn't drinking while I cooked. Doesn't everyone keep a beer bottle beside the soap dish? Geez.

See, if you rinse your mushrooms (as I'm doing there), you run the risk of them getting waterlogged. But, then, I like to live dangerously.

Into the pan they go.

A word on chicken stock and MSG.

Many of the chicken stocks you buy will proudly display the words NO MSG, since so many people are sensitive to MSG and the public has become increasingly aware of its harmful affects.

Unfortunately, there is a gap in the system, which allows manufacturers to use other alternative substances that contain MSG. These companies do not have to disclose that MSG does actually appear in these products. Therefore, if you are MSG-sensitive or are just trying to avoid it (wise), you should look for the words "autolyzed yeast extract" or hydrolyzed vegetable protein," among others. Both are hidden sources of MSG.

My stock actually does contain one of these. Eep! Obviously, I won't be buying this brand again. To learn more about hydrolyzed vegetable protein, a food filler found in MANY vegetarian foods, read my recent article here. Oh, and I don't get money for hits. I'm just passing along info. Promise. :)

I brought the shrooms to a boil and then added in my boxed seasoning and rice.

While that stuff was working its magic, I made us a couple quick salads using romaine, persian cucumbers, and the most perfect little sweet cherry tomatoes.

By this time, the shrooms and rice had done their business, and I added the chicken back in just to warm up.

This was super good, and honestly, no one would ever know that the rice was from a mix. Great weeknight supper!

Okay, I'm going to go soak in the tub and try to get myself sleepy. If that doesn't work, I'm throwing in the towel, declaring Insomnia the victor, and taking a Nyquil. Sometimes, it's required. This writer requires sleep.

Do you avoid MSG?
What other foods/additives/things do you avoid in food?
Do you buy "organic" items like produce and milk?

Things I've Been Doing

The title of this post pretty much sums up its content. Number one on that list is obvious.

1. NOT blogging. Hm. Sorry. I'm not actually in a funk or anything. I've just been really really busy. I recently took on a new writing job for Love to Know. I love love love it. Here are a few of my recent articles:

Best of all, it pays enough that we might actually be able to do normal things like pay bills and buy groceries. I'm starting to dislike the starving part of that whole starving writer cliche, anyway.

Other Things I've Been Doing

2. Decorating our new apartment. Holy crap and a halfstich, this is so fun! Nevermind the fact that it took us four hours to put up our Ikea curtains Friday night or that it took us another hour and a half to mount the brackets that sweep them to the side. We have really enjoyed every bit of making our new place look like "ours." I know I was married before, but seriously, who knew marriage could be so much fun?!

3. Writing my book. Hard work. Hard hard hard work. My husband (aka Editor) is a saint. That's all I have to say.

4. Not to give out TMI here, but how else does one say it? Babymaking. Good LAWD, we want a little brown version of us like you would not BELIEVE! Tough work. In a fun way. ;)

5. Falling in love all over again with my hubby. We've always been kind of awesome, but lately, things have been amazing. Working hard together on our house, going on long runs, spending hours upon hours editing the same sections of my book over and over again, (and all that babymaking?!?)... there's really no words. Who knew there could be this kind of love in the world?...

So... that's basically it. I've been periodically dealing with insomnia, which is the cause for a post at 1:28 a.m. Still, I can't really complain about losing sleep over life being so good, can I? I know I haven't been the most consistent blogger lately, but I promised myself I would blog when I wanted. Most of the time, that's a daily post or more. Sometimes, though, life is just too good for digital interruptions, and you just have to go with it. (Ya know I love ya guys.)

Ok. Back to bed.

Breakfast Find & More Weekend Pics

It's Monday! One of the really great things about working for myself is that I don't dread Mondays. I don't exactly love them, because it means hubby goes back to work, but I don't hate them. It's a beautiful thing. Really.

So, here are some more pictures from our little trip to Syrah this weekend.

I'm.So.Short.

I really need to wear high heels all the time just to look like I'm half-way normal.

Anywho, I'm about to have a meeting, so I'll make this quick. I wanted to show you what I found at the 99 Cent Store.

Score!

I've never had this before, and I'm stoked to give it a go. I'll let you know.

P.S. It's Spend Out Day 1. Wish me luck.

Going Out, Eating In

Hey all! How was your weekend?

Mine was good. I am still waiting on my friend to send me pics from an event we went to on Friday. Here's a sneak peek. More to come! This place was outrageously cool. I don't drink, so I'm always the one standing without a wine glass.

It's very weird for me to see these pics, because I can see every ounce of my "marital bliss" weight gain. I suppose I will call that even further motivation to kick it up a notch and keep on keeping on. :)

Tonight, I made fried chicken. I used whole wheat flour and EVOO for frying, but otherwise, this was just like my Moma made it. YUM.

I served it with steamed broccoli. Yep, serve that greasy mess with broccoli. It's all about balance, people. BALANCE. :p

Now, I'm about to work some more! Oh the life of a writer. :p

There's No Place Like Home :D

We're moved! It was absolutely an insane weekend, but we're all moved in.

Everything started Friday with a major push to get all the stuff packed. I was sad to pack up my office.

It just looked so empty. But, I was thrilled to finally get over here and start UNpacking.

Unfortunately, the movers were not so eager. They were supposed to come at 2pm on Saturday. Around 6:30, they rolled in, which meant they didn't get over to our new place with our stuff until after 8pm. :( Honestly, a frownie doesn't really convey how annoyed I was. It was after 10pm before they left. What a LONG day.

We slept on the floor, because our bed is from IKEA. Lots of pieces.

Those are all pieces of our bed!

That's our new dining room full of boxes. And, do you see that in the corner? An AIR CONDITIONER. You do not even know how excited I am to have an air conditioner.

We woke up this morning and got to unpacking. Because our table would need to be disassembled to move it into the dining room, we decided to leave it in the living room for now. We're expecting a brand new dining table (along with a great leather sectional and buffet) by the end of this month. Yay!

Lunch was an Organics veggie pizza (I added tofu to it.) and a salad.

For dinner, I made stuffed green peppers. I used sausage, brown rice, and fire-roasted tomatoes to stuff them. Yum!

I chopped up the pieces of the tops for the salad.

I cannot wait to give you guys pictures when the new furniture gets here! Yay!

I hope you guys had a fantastic weekend! Now, it's time to relax!

It's the Climb

As you know, JGago and I hiked Torrey Pines. We took mostly "artistic" pictures. I'm hoping to get some good images that I can blow up and put on the walls of my new place!!!

(Don't do it!!!!!!!)

Our car is wayyyyy down there.

Yesterday, I made a box of Near East pasta. I added in cherry tomatoes and a chopped up hardboiled egg. After I made the pasta, I added in the tomatoes and crushed egg, and then I chilled for 20 minutes. Yum!
