I first enjoyed tempeh at Stone Brewery, where I had the most amazing tempeh shepherd's pie. Since that time, I've been dying to make it myself.
I had to write an article (the article is here) about vegetarian swedish meatballs, so I thought I'd whip up some tempeh swedish meatballs. Tempeh, if you don't know, is made using grains, like rice and millet, so it has a density that even meat-lovers tend to enjoy.
Unfortunately, this just wasn't good. In fact, we threw it out. Yes, it was really that bad.
Fail. Booooo.
Good news though!
I went to my accupuncture appointment on Monday (I go for my carpal tunnel and lower back pain), and my accupuncturist immediately offered to give me herbs to help me get over my sinus infection/bronchitis/dog's barking cough. I was skeptical, but oh my word. This stuff worked OVER NIGHT.
The herbs looked like this (Yikes, right?!?):
I followed the directions, which includes boiling them until the water (6 cups) is reduced in half (3 cups). You drink 1 cup, three times a day. I had two packets. So, today is my second day.
Here's the end result. My mom called it "witch's brew" when I told her about it. :p She wasn't laughing today when I called her and coughed over the phone. No bark today, mom!
Holy cow. I'm a believer. I was the sickest I've been as an adult EVER. I'm almost well today. AMAZING!

I used to be a vegetarian :) Not any more though! We've reduced our meat intake to 1-2 times per week only and no red meat.
ReplyDeleteI've never had tempeh but I LOVE tofu. We eat it at least once a week I think.
I have a ton of yummy meatless recipes on my blog...most have cheese though, so not vegan. I love tofu with noodles, veggies, and thai spicy peanut sauce. Or Ma Po Tofu, I'm not sure I have that one up on the blog. We had homemade black bean patties tonight.

I love my cuban black beans and rice! I make a huge pot and then eat it for days and days. I usually eat it with white or yellow rice but it is also great to use on tacos and taco salad.

I'm sorry you disliked the meatballs, Jasmine. I'm not a vegetarian/vegan and have never cooked with tempeh. I do, however, love food and once a week or so make a meatless meal. I found your blog by chance but will be back often for inspiration. I hope you are having a wonderful day. Blessings...Mary
